Re: Discovering Battles, meeting the band
That's awesome that Thom is a fan. I read somewhere that Stanier really enjoyed TKOL. I first heard of Battles in 2009 from a few friends (musicians) in college. Somehow Battles came up in some discussion, I think it was about Don Caballero-- and they asked if I had heard them. I hadn't and they told me to check them out. I saw the video for "Atlas" and really dug it, then bought Mirrored and EP C/B EP. Add to that Gloss Drop ( I eagerly anticipated it's release and it delivered) and they've...

Re: Discovering Battles, meeting the band
A friend showed me Battles and thought I'd like them. They were always that "weird band that has chanting n' stuff" But I couldn't stop listening to it. Then one day I stopped doing other stuff while listening to it, and for the first time I noticed their amazing musicianship, and creative layering and interplay. Eventually they became my favorite band, and even though Gloss Drop wasn't quite as ground breaking for me as Mirrored, I grew to like it almost as much, and anticipated any...

Re: Discovering Battles, meeting the band
Ok you guys, the other day at St Vitus in Brooklyn I had the ultimate fan experience. Of course I went to NY from my home in Texas mostly to see the guys perform. So I showed up to queue at 1pm not knowing what time most people would show up (turned out most show up at doors). Well about half an hour later the band showed up to load in. I introduced myself and they knew who I was! (especially Ian, he and I have conversed on Twitter before) Well even Dave and John have been to the fan site...

Re: Discovering Battles, meeting the band
Greetings Battles fans...first post! Been a Battles fan since the beginning when I heard about the Tras single coming out and I bought it right away being familiar with DonCab, Lynx and Helmet. Saw them live four times: During EP years, Mirrored tour twice, Gloss Drop tour, and I have tix for the new tour. I'm from the New England area and I got to meet Ian and Dave at a non-Battles show in RI while they were recording Gloss Drop. They were really nice to me. Met John on the Mirrored tour...

Jealous that you saw them early on! I didn't see them until Gloss Drop. Bet those early shows were amazing. Welcome!

Re: Official "new album" thread
Given what we've heard so far I'd say 'La Di Da Di' is going to be the perfect blend of the EP's, Mirrored & Gloss Drop all packaged into yet another reinvention of the 'rock band'. I can hear tones and songwriting styles from each era just in 'The Yabba' alone. And from reading that Rolling Stone interview, I'm so glad it's a full-length record intended to be listened to all at once

Re: Official "new album" thread
I can't think of any artist, except Battles, that I even like enough to listen to a leaked release from. To your point: 1. I agree. Though for me, I listened to Gloss Drop 3 months prior to it's release and my opinion/listening only increased after hearing it in high quality. I doubt that will change with the new record. 2. I don't feel I've disrespected the artist. I support the artist. I've purchased every Battles release and have paid/will pay to see them live. Like I said, I'm going to...

The Yabba, official video: http://www.vevo.com/watch/batt...e-Yabba/GB5171500250 What do you guys think? I was so excited to see it in my feed! But I thought it was odd, not in a great way. I guess after the super creative videos from Gloss Drop I was expecting a higher production value, this seems like something a new band might put out. Was anyone bothered by them pretending to play on the concrete without their instruments plugged in anywhere? LOL. And what was the point of the footage of...

Very happy to hear all the crisp detail of the official release. Great new album, especially when you get to know all of its subtle nuances. I think it tops Gloss Drop for me!

Re: Battles Atlas fan interview (your questions answered)
Live DVD? Any old or new unreleased material? Longer directors cut of "The Art of Repetition"? EPC on vinyl? Both Ian and John are doing or have done other projects while in Battles. What about Dave? Does Ian plan to release any of the solo material he's done recently? Are Tyondai's parts on what became Gloss Drop really deleted forever, or do versions of those songs with him on them still exist privately in a vault somewhere?

Re: Battles Atlas fan interview (your questions answered)
I want to second the Dave side project question. Is he a food photographer? Also, i remember an interview on gloss drop where they said they where scrambling to learn how to play all the songs they'd written before touring. Was it the same for this record, or were they thinking about how to play the songs while writting them? What's Ian's sense of humour like now that hes a dad? More puns/dad humor? im curious to know how many gigs of recording files this album generated. looping seems to be...

Re: Battles Atlas fan interview (your questions answered)
I second the Tyondai/Gloss Drop deleted parts question. Always been curious if they really deleted them and if there's an original "White Electric" take. Future EPs between records? Ian hinted at something like that, releasing music more frequently but this is Battles we're talking about.

Thanks for this! Sound quality is quite good. Stanier should don a GoPro so we can see the machine work from the machine's pov.

Thanks for checking them out! Video is standard-def 4:3 aspect ratio - but actually looks better than a dimly lit club would, thanks to the lighting. Audio is courtesy an X/Y stereo condenser - I'm pretty happy with how the audio turned out. John's playing is super hard hitting and tight, so I'm glad it was able to capture some of that energy.

Re: my Hi/Lo harpsichord cover
awesome covers you two! I covered Inchworm with my sequencer. https://jimmcmanimon.bandcamp....chworm-battles-cover I made the organ loop back in 2011 when Gloss Drop came out. Basically a Korg synth hooked into a POG2 and looped through a Gibson Echoplex. I added a drum machine (Superior Drummer) and some guitar. Was too lazy to do more of the other cool stuff that the track has but anyway, enjoy!

Re: New Tour Thread
Cool! It's weird there haven't been many video interviews this time. For Gloss Drop there were a lot.

Discovering Battles, meeting the band

Dave writes a newsletter
16 / July / 2015 Dear Friends, Due to the nature of cryptic social media interaction, we rarely have the opportunity to directly correspond with you in more that 146 characters. Therefore, on behalf of John, Ian and myself, we feel that it would only be appropriate to take a moment to share with you—straight from the horses’ mouths—that we are very happy to announce the impending arrival of Battles’ third full-length album. It is called La Di Da Di , and it will be released on September 18,...

major updates to website
Hi Everyone, Just to let you know a heads-up about many updates I made to the site. If you haven't checked it out in a while, this is a good time as we wait for LP4! You may have already noticed that I removed Dave from the header image. :( Well the art is still there, so in a way he is as well. Of course I will update that with new art as soon as images are available from the new album. I wonder who will be doing the art now? http://battlesatlas.com/band. html I updated with the new bio...

Re: How do you feel about the next BTTLS record being all-instrumental?
I'm a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Africastle and Futura were two of my favorite tracks on Gloss Drop. But the vocal tracks helped to break the record up and make it livelier I think. I liked their collaborations with other artists. I'm also concerned that an all-instrumental record will lose them some followers and make them more obscure. What do you think?

Re: How do you feel about the next BTTLS record being all-instrumental?
Though I don't mind the next record being instrumental, I agree with some of your points. Maybe they didn't want to deal with or write music to vocals this time around but it's not like vocals can't be used in unique ways like weird sample patterns or sequences. They did that in a very straightforward way with Gloss Drop. I guess we'll have to wait until the 2019 record for vocals.

My Machines With Tyondai Braxton
With there being a few recordings of an early version of the Gloss Drop song My Machines with Tyondai Braxton singing on it instead of Gary Numan, has anyone been able to decipher what Ty is singing ? Would love to know as its probably my favorite song off of Gloss Drop and the Tyondai version is a such a unique and cool take on the song before Gary Numan became the vocalist for it.
